    Bifurcation in a Discrete Competition System

    A new difference system is induced from a differential competition system by different discrete methods. We give theoretical analysis for local bifurcation of the fixed points and derive the conditions under which the local bifurcations such as flip occur at the fixed points. Furthermore, one- and two-dimensional diffusion systems are given when diffusion terms are added. We provide the Turing instability conditions by linearization method and inner product technique for the diffusion system with periodic boundary conditions. A series of numerical simulations are performed that not only verify the theoretical analysis, but also display some interesting dynamics

    Multiple cystic echinococcosis in abdominal and pelvic cavity treated by surgery with a 4-year follow-up: a case report

    We report a case of a male patient who presented with multiple abdominal and pelvic echinococcosis. The patient had been diagnosed with hepatic echinococcosis for 7 years and developed intermittent distension and discomfort in the upper abdomen after an accidental fall. In recent years, the patient’s abdominal distention increased gradually. Computed tomography revealed multiple hydatid cysts in the liver, spleen, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity. Abdominal organs were severely compressed, such that he could not eat normally except for a liquid diet. The patient underwent radical surgical resection based on the multi-disciplinary treatment (MDT) and the operation lasted 10 h, nearly 100 hydatid cysts were excised, about 18 liters of cyst fluid and cyst contents were removed, and the patient lost 20 kg of weight after surgery. The operation was successful, but there were still some postoperative complications such as hypovolemic shock, postoperative ascites, postoperative bile leakage. Treatment measures for the patient were anti-infection, antishock, clamping the abdominal drainage tube, and negative pressure abdominal puncture drainage. At follow up the patient’s quality of life had been significantly improved with 15 kg weight gain compared to before

    Physicochemical characterization and antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from Chlorella sp. by microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction

    Microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction (MAEE) was used for the separation of polysaccharides from micro-Chlorella. The extraction condition of MAEE was optimized by Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. Results showed that the optimal condition for the extraction of Chlorella sp. crude polysaccharides (CSCP) was at 50°C for 2.3 h with 380 W of microwave power and 0.31% of enzyme dosage. Under the optimal extraction condition, the extraction yield of CSCP reached 0.72%. Similarly, the α-amylase modification conditions of the CSCP were also optimized, in which the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging rate was used as the response value. The scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals was 17.58% when enzyme dosage was 271 U/g at 51°C for 14 min. Moreover, the enzyme-modified CSCP presented a typical heteropolysaccharide mainly including glucose (48.84%), ribose (13.57%) and mannose (11.30%).     Chitooligosaccharide enhanced the efficacy of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CAS02 for the control of tobacco black shank

    IntroductionTobacco black shank is a devastating soil-borne disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora nicotianae, severely hamper tobacco production worldwide. However, the synergistic effect of biocontrol bacteria and marine polysaccharides/oligosaccharides on tobacco black shank control was few documented.MethodsIn this study, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CAS02 (CAS02) and chitooligosaccharide (COS) were screened firstly, and their synergistic antagonistic effect against P. nicotianae and the underlying mechanism were investigated in vitro and in vivo.ResultsIn vitro experiments showed that, compared with the application of CAS02 or COS alone, co-application of CAS02 and COS significantly increased the inhibition rate against P. nicotianae by 11.67% and 63.31%, respectively. Furthermore, co-application of CAS02 and COS disrupted the structure of mycelia to a greater extent. The co-application of CAS02 and COS showed synergistic effect, with the relative control effect maintained above 60% during the 60-day pot experiment, significantly higher than that of application CAS02 or COS alone. The combined application of CAS02 and COS reduced the relative abundance of P. nicotianae in the rhizosphere soil and increased the relative abundance of bacterial taxa potentially involved in disease suppression, such as Nocardioides, Devosia and Bradyrhizobium. Meanwhile, CAS02 and COS synergistically activated salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (ET), and hypersensitive response (HR) defense signaling pathways in tobacco plants.DiscussionOur findings demonstrate that co-application of CAS02 and COS remarkably improve the relative control effect against tobacco black shank through multiple pathways and provide a promising strategy for the efficient green control of tobacco black shank

    Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) deficiency exacerbates pressure overload-induced cardiac dysfunction by inhibiting Beclin-1 dependent autophagy pathway

    AbstractMitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) was demonstrated to play cardioprotective roles in cardiovascular diseases. Nonetheless, little is known about the roles and mechanisms of ALDH2 in pressure overload-induced cardiac damages. In this study, we revealed that ALDH2 deficiency overtly exacerbated transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced cardiac dysfunction. Cardiomyocyte enlargement was observed in both WT and ALDH2−/− mice in HE-stained myocardial tissue samples at 8weeks post TAC surgery. Mitochondrial morphology and structure were also significantly damaged post TAC surgery and the changes were aggravated in ALDH2−/− TAC hearts. ALDH2 deficiency also depressed myocardial autophagy in hearts at 8weeks post TAC surgery with a potential mechanism of repressing the expression of Beclin-1 and promoting the interaction between Bcl-2 and Beclin-1. These data indicate that ALDH2 deficiency exacerbates the pressure overload induced cardiac dysfunction partly by inhibiting Beclin-1 dependent autophagy pathway.This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Autophagy and protein quality control in cardiometabolic diseases

    PSR J1926-0652: A Pulsar with Interesting Emission Properties Discovered at FAST

    We describe PSR J1926-0652, a pulsar recently discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Using sensitive single-pulse detections from FAST and long-term timing observations from the Parkes 64-m radio telescope, we probed phenomena on both long and short time scales. The FAST observations covered a wide frequency range from 270 to 800 MHz, enabling individual pulses to be studied in detail. The pulsar exhibits at least four profile components, short-term nulling lasting from 4 to 450 pulses, complex subpulse drifting behaviours and intermittency on scales of tens of minutes. While the average band spacing P3 is relatively constant across different bursts and components, significant variations in the separation of adjacent bands are seen, especially near the beginning and end of a burst. Band shapes and slopes are quite variable, especially for the trailing components and for the shorter bursts. We show that for each burst the last detectable pulse prior to emission ceasing has different properties compared to other pulses. These complexities pose challenges for the classic carousel-type models.Comment: 13pages with 12 figure
